In a world where the news is often filled with headlines of global crises and national issues, it’s easy to forget the importance of community—the people and places closest to us. Supporting local good causes is one of the most impactful ways to invest in your community. This cause hits close to home for me, especially through my sponsorship of Callum Verney, a rugby player at Topsham RFC.
Why local charities matter
Local charities are the backbone of our communities. Unlike larger national or international organisations, these charities focus on the immediate needs of the people around us. Whether providing food and shelter, supporting youth programmes, or preserving local heritage, they directly address the issues affecting our day-to-day lives. When we support these good causes, we’re not just donating money or time; we’re investing in the future of our communities.
A personal connection: why I decided to support Callum and Topsham RFC
My connection to Topsham goes beyond just supporting local causes—Topsham is in my blood. My mum’s side of the family has been Topsham-born and bred for generations, so the town holds a special place in my heart. From my Grandad Henry Pym being Station Officer at Topsham Fire Station, my Great Uncle (Stan Pym) having been the ferryman for many years previously, to my Great Great Uncle Dick ‘Pincher’ Pym being a Topsham fisherman turned famous footballer, playing in goal for Exeter City FC, then Bolton Wanderers in the 1920s. He played in the first FA Cup Final at Wembley in 1925 for Bolton called the “White Horse Final” and went on to earn 3 caps for England.
When the opportunity arose to sponsor rugby player Callum, at Topsham RFC, it felt like the perfect way to give back to the community that means so much to my family.
Rugby is more than just a sport at Topsham RFC; it’s a community. The club brings together people of all ages and backgrounds, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie that’s so essential in today’s world. By supporting Callum, I’d like to think that I’m not just helping him with his rugby development, but that I’m supporting a community that values teamwork, resilience, and local pride.
How You Can Get Involved
Supporting local charities doesn’t always have to mean financial contributions, although those are always welcome. You might want to volunteer, attend local events, or spread the word about the work these essential organisations do to make a huge difference. Every little bit helps, and together, we can ensure our communities thrive.
In a time when it’s easy to feel disconnected, supporting local charities and good causes reminds us that we’re all part of something bigger. Whether it’s through a donation, sponsorship, or simply showing up, we all have a role to play in keeping our communities strong.
